This is probably common sense and a topic we've covered numerous times here before. But if you take something you've published and then distribute that content to be republished on other sites or another site, those other sites may rank above you for that piece of content in Google. As Danny Sullivan from Google said on this topic not too long ago, your best bet is to make your syndication partner canonical back[1] to your original story....

I do not follow the Google Hotel user interfaces too closely and it is a space where Google is constantly testing new interfaces. But over the past week or so, I am getting a lot of reports of new features, from map overlay hovers to a massive number of new filters to find the perfect hotel. Here are some tweets with screen shots showing off these new features: Google is testing city filters in hotel local packs (I'm...

Google has fixed a bug where Google Ads were overreporting conversions between November 11 at 12:01 AM PST through November 20 at 11:59 PM PST. This specifically impacted advertisers using non-last click attribution models and impacted reports in all Google Ads interfaces, including any report data downloaded via the AdWords API, Google Ads API and Google Ads scripts. Google said[1] on Sunday, November 24th that it fixed the issue. Google wrote the issue is now resolved "for...

Here are some screen shots form Andrew Nechiporuk on Twitter[1] of new looks for how Google shows weather results in Google search. You can see this one has a large graphic showing it is cold outside and then shows the weather by hour below. Both look different from the normal weather knowledge panel. I feel like I have seen this test before, but maybe on the Google App and not using my iPhone's Safari browser? Here are more...

Here are some photos from the Google Webmaster Conference in Tokyo. This photo is from the back of the room taken by Gary Illyes of Google but I embedded more photos from others. It looks like a nice room and nice audience. Gary posted the one above on Twitter[1]. Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable[1] and other search forums on the web. Search Engine Roundtable Stories: Search Buzz Video Recap: WSJ On Google Search, Google Search Tremors, Bing Uses BERT, Google Ads & Politics & More[2]This was a busy week, but I start off explaining some more things around my reaction article on the Wall Street Journals piece of Google Search. I then...

I have to say that this week, starting from last Friday[1], has been pretty volatile with the organic search results. All week long, people have been asking me if there is a Google update today. Truth is, it feels like tremors all week long. The chatter and tracking tools seem to confirm this as well. Google will probably say yea, we do updates[2] and don't get me wrong, I don't blame Google. It is constantly doing updates: Some...

This was a busy week, but I start off explaining some more things around my reaction article on the Wall Street Journals piece of Google Search. I then cite a new tweet from Matt Cutts on a similar topic. Google had an algorithm update over the weekend but the tremors are being felt all week long. Bing has been using BERT for a while and it now is used on all queries, globally. Google had a...

I've been covering search for a while and sometimes you see questions you really haven't seen before, this is one of those times. Someone asked Google's John Mueller if Google still has an indexing limit of 250 static pages per web site. The answer is no, Google has no limit but I've never seen that question asked before. There are massive sites out there with millions and even billions of pages on them and Google can, if...

Google Ads announced[1] new data available in the bid strategy report that shows you the top bidding signals. These signals can include device type, location, day of week, time of day, keywords and more. Google said To start, these signals will be viewable for campaigns using Target CPA and Maximize conversions on Search. Support for Target ROAS and Maximize conversion value will be available at a later date. Top signals may include, but are not limited to: Device...
